A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is a system with a motor that can convey inputs and generate mechanical force. Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is a type of variable frequency drive that comes in a variety of names, including adjustable frequency drive and adjustable speed drive, variable speed drive, AC drive, micro drive, inverter, and drive.

The operation of a VFD is divided into many steps: the drive stores the AC voltage and frequency in the rectifier bridge, which converts the voltage to DC. A capacitor bank and accompanying inductors are used to filter the converted DC voltage. The DC voltage is then inverted back to AC and transmitted to the motor at the requested frequency in the next step.
